Today I’d like to talk to you about secret sauce. While most of us are familiar with the kind of secret sauce that you put on a burger, the secret sauce I’m talking about is that magical combination of ingredients that help you make your marketing shine.
Secret sauce can be elusive sometimes. These days, the social web has opened up so many more channels – Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and more dominate our online spaces. As a marketer, it can be a challenge to know what combination of these channels are going to work best to tell your story.
There are plenty of “experts” out there who will try to tell you that you need to be doing everything. The reality is, if you’re like me, you don’t have the time or the resources to be active on every social tool. And you don’t need to be. What you do need to understand is what tools are going to be the most effective for getting your message out. This is where secret sauce comes in.
Your secret sauce starts with a great idea, and centers around your purpose. What is it that you’re really trying to accomplish with your online marketing? Think of this as the base ingredient of your secret sauce. Get really clear on this. Then, you can start to look around and see what other ingredients you can add to the mix. Is your story particularly visual? Then maybe Instagram or YouTube are great places to add to the mix. Maybe you’re trying to build a tight-knit community of people who care passionately for what you do – Facebook is great for that.
The great thing about secret sauce is that you can try different blends of things over time. You can move away from the ingredients that don’t blend well and come up with whole new variations that work even better.
In the end, what you have is a secret sauce that is unique to you, and the story you want to tell. But remember, always start with the base (your goals) and build from there.
