Content is King, as the saying goes, and it’s true. We live in a sea of information in this online world, and now more than ever, it’s essential that your Web content stands out from the pack. Great writing is key, but there’s a lot more to it than that.
Writing great content for the Web starts with really understanding the medium you’re working with. People access Web content through myriad means – laptops, tablets, desktops and smart phones are all being used to access your site. How does this affect the way you write for these audiences?
We live in world where simply posting your press release to your web site no longer flies. People want engaging, relevant content that speaks to them. You want your customers to take action on what you’ve told them. That means finding ways to deliver interesting content in myriad ways that works well across platforms.
Sound overwhelming? You’re not alone. One of the questions I get asked most by clients and online friends is, “How can I write better online content?”. I’ve been a writer for 25 years. I started out writing for television, and I can tell you that writing TV scripts has some striking similarities to writing Web content – it needs to be concise, catchy, and descriptive, without being overly sales pitchy. It needs to reach out and grab peoples’ attention, and then work to keep it.
I started writing content for the Web in 1997, and worked for a number of years as a professional web content developer and consultant, managing content development for several large scale web sites. In our work at Jester Creative, we help many of our clients write compelling content across all of their online channels, including web sites and social networks. In 2006, when I started my blog, I had no idea where it would take me. I can tell you for a fact that it’s had a very positive impact on our business here at Jester Creative, and has opened up all sorts of great opportunities for me personally and professionally.
