Maybe we’re sounding like a broken record, but it’s only because it’s so true: content is king! With the deluge of brands and businesses turning to social media to connect with their audiences, grabbing someone’s attention and keeping it means developing a diverse range of great content. Videos, photos, Twitter streams, downloadables. There are so many ways you can promote yourself, but they’re all handled in different locations. YouTube for video, FlickR for photos, Twitter for news… you get the idea. To ensure you’re presenting a cohesive representation of your brand, you need to be able to collect all of these in one spot. You need a website, but not just any website. You need one that can handle a constant stream of information. You need a content management system.
There are many choices out there: Typepad, Drupal, SquareSpace. I build almost all of our websites on WordPress. This robust platform is totally free, it’s easy to deploy and maintain and best of all it has access to a library of over 26,000 plugins! The majority of these are also free, but you can get some incredibly powerful and polished premium plugins that can turn your home on the web into a vibrant hub of conversation and e-Commerce.
Where do you start? We’re glad you asked! Starting November 2013, you can get hands-on instruction on how to set up your very own WordPress-based website with Creating and Managing a WordPress Site, a one-day course from Eliquo and Jester Creative. Learn how to prepare your database, set up a FTP client, install the core WordPress software and customize the themes, plugins and widgets. And best of all, if it doesn’t sink in the first time around, you can get a free refresher course!
The timing is right. Start brainstorming your website ideas now! With a platform like WordPress at your fingertips, the sky’s the limit!
