I don’t think it is an understatement to say the Internet changed the way we carry out our day-to-day activities. Things that, in the past, would have taken months to complete all of a sudden take minutes, and all the information in world is literally just a Google search away (or Yahoo if that’s your thing). These improvements in communication have yielded many new ways to market yourself.
With the social media boom that has been taking place these past few years, now more than ever it is easier to reach the eyes and ears of your audience. When people talk about social media, our thoughts immediately race to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, but by far the most popular social media site is YouTube. YouTube has over 1 billion unique visitors every single month, with 80% of its traffic coming from outside of the US. It is the second most visited website in the world, behind only Google (that actually owns YouTube), so it’s no surprise that web videos have overtaken conventional TV commercials as the go-to way to promote your business.
Finding the right video that captures the imagination of your audience requires a mixture of planning, research, and a little bit of luck. But when you get the formula right, the benefits it reaps are astounding. Take the recent pop sensation “Psy”, who went from a relatively unknown South Korean singer to literally the biggest pop name of 2012. The fact that I can reference a South Korean pop singer in a Canadian blog and feel certain that most people who read that will get the reference alone shows how powerful web videos can be.
Videos come in different shapes and sizes, from conventional commercial-like web videos, to guerilla marketing videos like the recent “Telekinetic Coffee Shop Surprise” used to promote the movie “Carrie” that currently has over 55 million views on YouTube. Choosing the right type of video requires knowledge of your target audience, but generally speaking there is no right answer, it all comes down to execution.
These are just a few points to hopefully inform some of you of the benefits of using web videos to grow your business or promote your event.
